McCain and the New York Mets competing for worst week ever

It's been a rough two weeks for John McCain.  It seems like his chances are sinking faster than the Mets chances of making the playoffs.

Yesterday was a particularly bad day.  Letterman blistered him for skipping out on his appearance.  Sarah Palin turned in another week performance in a one-on-one interview with Katie Couric.  She was also savaged by the press for her two day photo opp tour, which has amounted to little more than surrounding her with people who aren't from the United States.

And the kicker was his failed attempt to have the presidential debate suspended while Congress sorts out this bailout mess.  It was an odd gesture, and nobody is buying it.

At the end of the day, McCain desperately needs to rattle this election with his debate performance Friday night.  That's a lot to ask of someone who is a mediocre debater.  At this point, Obama simply needs to avoid any mistakes, while McCain needs three knockout punches.  A tall order.

Screw McCain, the Mets had a much worse 2 weeks. The Mets would be leading the NL East by 10 games if they blew half the number of games that they have already (the Mets have blown the lead 32 times in games they lead after 6 innings)

Seriously, this is tragic.

Mitch, the Mets will be leading 4-2 going into the 6th tonight.... unfortunately for Mets fans, we know how that will turn out.

what the hell, you might as well bring back John Franco. He just got back in town from celebrating his 70th birthday

I think an appropriate headline for McCain's latest tactic might be "McCain Incapable of Multi-Tasking" or something around how he needs more time to review his debate notes.

Between the Phillies and the Mets, I'll take the Mets anyday. Let's Go, Mets GO!!!!

(until after the series with the Cubs, and not in effect if they play the Cubs in the playoffs)

And just as I wrote this post, the latest gallup poll has it back in a dead heat, 46-46. This is hard to figure out .. I still think there is a huge disconnect between the elite media and middle America. Maybe they're seeing all this stuff differently ... that's McCain's only hope at this point.

most polls have obama up in most swing states, but by a very close margin. we cannot discont that a large chunk of obama supporters are of an age/demographic that simply doesnt have a land line, and that many more if this group wouldnt waste their time taking a poll...tell me a gen X or Y'er that sits at home taking pollster calls...doesnt happen

Check out fivethirtyeight.com. It from Nate Silver, a baseball statistician. He does a much better job of weighting the polls for pollster induced error, and complies that into a series of outcomes. He bases his results on the number of outcomes a candidate or party wins.

I can't argue with a guy who does baseball numbers. At least argue much.

Mitch has an excellent point on home phones. Depending on what happens, pollsters will have to retool how they reach out to people. Given the large claims they make on such small sample sizes, they'll need to figure out how to incorporate cellphones in their pollls.
